DKA devotes an Expansion Team for each expansion project. This Expansion Team will be on campus for weeks to even months, to conduct the colonization. Their time is spent attaining the following six goals:

  1. Developing a positive working rapport with the host institution and the local community.
  2. Developing a positive relationship with the campus, Cinema/Film School, and Student Organization communities.
  3. Recruiting and training alumni to ensure effective advisement and support.
  4. Recruiting the highest quality men and women on campus.
  5. Educating the membership on the ideals and operations of a society.
  6. Integrating the membership into the campus and community.

Each expansion project takes on its own personality. The Expansion Team will spend time on campus to become familiar with the campus culture. Meetings are initiated between the Expansion Team and the local stakeholders. We consider the following individuals or groups to be the local stakeholders: campus administrators, faculty and staff members, student organization leaders and advisors, and cinema community leaders.

Constant contact with the campus Student Life Advisor and Cinema/TV School Administrators is crucial to the success of the expansion effort. Moreover, area alumni are contacted and a series of meetings will be held to inform them on the expansion process and explain in detail the importance of alumni support. These meetings will allow us to identify key alumni from which a Board of Governors will be formed. Leaders among campus and community members are also sought out to be incorporated into the group’s advisory team.

Undergraduates are recruited through an awareness building and a recommendation process. Our process does not rely solely on a mass marketing approach. Recommendations are solicited from meetings with the aforementioned stakeholders. DKA seeks to recruit individuals who set scholarship and career development as their top priorities; who involve themselves on campus and in the community; who are competitive and team players; and who treat themselves and others with respect. DKA wants men and women who desire to balance their classroom education with experiential learning outside of it.

After the colonization process is completed, the campus will be left with a well-respected, fully functional society. The newly formed colony will be given the necessary attention and resources to overcome any early struggles that may arise. Constant communication between the alumni, area volunteers, the Expansion Coordinator, the Expansion Team and the Board of Governors will ensure that the colony is provided with the necessary resources and support.

In addition, the colony will submit reports to the Board of Governors, to be reviewed by the Expansion Coordinator. The report will cover; basic operations (including finances, recruitment, community service, alumni involvement and colony management) and integration into the campus and community. Expansion Coordinator, along with the Expansion Team, will maintain regular contact and will schedule at minimum two visits per colony per year. The focus of the visits will be determined by the growth and progress of the colony. The first visit generally takes place within the first ninety days of the colonization.
